This is so surreal.
Seeing someone that you once spent a significant amount of time with on trial for the murder of an entire family is something I never imagined would happen in my lifetime.
That face. That man. This day.
It’s all just mind-blowing and I haven’t quite wrapped my head around it since the very first day I saw his face on the news when the McStay family’s disappearance was first being reported on.
We sat and ate meals together with family. We did a lot together. Chase didn’t let many people very close to him. I am now realizing that I’m probably one of the only people out there who can detail the kinds of things the prosecution still has yet to find or present regarding Chase’s character.
There is more. So much more.
McStay Family Murder / Charles (Chase) Merritt Trial Video Footage
Chase’s character will be a big deal in this trial, but I don’t imagine it will secure his conviction. Anyone who followed the McStay family investigation knows that Chase has already been described as:
- Bad with money. Perpetually broke, in fact. I am not sure how he was able to cash the checks that he forged to himself from Mcstay’s QB account since Chase had a very bad reputation with banks. It is not widely known that he had his customer checks made out to his girlfriend’s name because he could not obtain a bank account himself.
- Impulsive and impatient. He would make large purchases or big decisions on impulse.
- Sociopath – Chase is incredibly cunning, and what I haven’t yet seen mentioned about Chase is that he was especially effective at becoming a different version of “Chase”, depending on who he was with, and what his motives were with that person. When you initially meet Chase, he can easily and quickly size you up to figure out what he can say and do to gain your trust and admiration. Everything down to his body language is ever so calculated.
- Complete lack of ethics in regard to business – You will have already seen numerous complaints from his business’s past customers. Chase was constantly dodging calls from angry customers that he failed to deliver products for. I always figured one day he’d piss off the wrong person and finally start doing right by his business ventures. You can pretty much spiderweb this lack of ethics out into every other area of his life. Relationships, parenting, and anything else. He was still very proud and would boast that he was untouchable.
